Turnkey Solution For Multi-Engine Test Bench

The Importance of Engine Test Bench

An engine test bench is used to test and validate critical engine parameters such as power, fuel consumption, vibration, noise, crankshaft torque, angular velocity, pollutant concentrations, mainly after the major overhaul. This facility is essential for engine manufacturers and the users of a large fleet of diesel engines (like mining, offshore, railways, marine, Navy, Coast Guard, Army, etc.)

The Neptunus Vision for Innovation

Neptunus endeavours to build innovative, operator-friendly, and environmentally sustainable engineering systems. One of the innovative solutions is a test bench designed for testing multiple engines of varied makes and capacities. Normally, the test benches in use are meant for testing only a single type of engine. This poses serious limitations. Neptunus’ innovative design has overcome this limitation and created significant value for the customers. With our superior engine knowledge and experience, we have saved significant CAPEX and OPEX of engine testing, demonstrating our expertise in engine test cell design and turnkey execution

 How Do We Add Value?

At Neptunus, we design and deliver custom-designed test bench with auxiliaries to test single or multiple diesel engines of different RPMs and power capacities. One such type of multi-engine test bench was successfully designed and set-up by Neptunus to meet the challenging needs of the Kenyan Navy at their Mombasa facility in Kenya.

Multi-Engine Test Cell Set-Up for Kenyan Navy

The Customer’s Challenge

The Kenyan Navy wanted to upgrade their existing test cell to enable testing of 5 more critical engines on their naval ships. Typically they would have to either build 5 different test cells or run the risk of running their ships on untested engines. Both of these were unaffordable propositions. They wanted to build one test cell that could test all 5 of their engines, ranging from 900 kW to 4 mW.  Such a test cell was never built anywhere in the world earlier.

Design Challenges for Neptunus

Each engine had its own heat balance and different requirements of cooling systems. In addition, designing a base frame good enough for 5 engines of different weights, shaft diameters, and individual base frames was challenging.

Neptunus Solution

We built the world’s 1st ever multi-engine, multi-brand test cell. Our innovative design catered to and exceeded the Navy requirements. Designs were approved and vetted by the Danish representatives in Kenya. Design validation was done when all the engines were tested on the testbed. Other than exhaust gases, the plant has zero effluent discharge. Even lube oil used for testing is recycled using a 0.1-micron filter.

Impact

The Kenyan Navy now has a state of art test cell that will cater to its requirements for the next decade

Customer Testimonial

“Neptunus displayed a huge knowledge of the topic in design, and the project has turned into a “state-of-the-art” test cell rebuild. Throughout the whole project, Neptunus have proved themselves as a very professional, competent and trustworthy company, which I have no hesitation in recommending”
