Objective

To perform an emergency repair and overhaul of the damaged port clutch to restore functionality, eliminate oil leakage, and prevent vessel downtime.

Challenge / Problem Context

  • Severe oil leakage at the clutch output shaft
  • Broken output shaft flyer and damaged seal race
  • Worn-out bearing and abnormal shaft movement
  • Heat marks and wear on output shaft coupling
  • Urgent response needed to prevent vessel downtime

What Did We Do?

1. Mobilized Emergency Service Team

  • Diverted Neptunus’ available team stationed in Qatar to the vessel at short notice.
  • Prioritized the job to address the emergency breakdown.

2. Clutch Dismantling and Inspection

  • Disconnected oil pipelines and electricals.
  • Removed input/output shaft flanges, housing bolts, and upper housing.
  • Transported the clutch to the workshop for detailed dismantling.
  • Identified damaged components: output shaft flyer, seal race, bearings, coupling, and friction plates.

3. Component Reconditioning

  • Reconditioned the damaged flyer and seal race by adding sleeves and machining excess material.
  • Reconditioned the output shaft coupling to remove roughness and restore geometry.
  • Polished the output shaft seating area to eliminate scratches.

4. Replacement of Damaged Parts

  • Replaced bearings, seal rings, friction and steel plates, gaskets, and springs.
  • Used Niigata-approved genuine spares with traceability.

5. Reassembly and Quality Check

  • Assembled the clutch with new and reconditioned components.
  • Conducted thorough testing for oil leakage, noise, and vibration.
  • Verified STBD clutch to ensure no similar issues were present.

Results That We Achieved

  • Immediate containment and resolution of oil leakage.
  • Restored clutch performance with no abnormal sound or vibration.
  • Prevented major vessel downtime through rapid emergency response.
  • Reconditioned key components to extend clutch life and reduce replacement cost.
  • Delivered a successful overhaul using genuine NIIGATA parts, aligned with OEM standards.
