W9L20
Asset
Offshore Support Vessel
Summary About The Project
Neptunus was engaged to perform a scheduled 38,000-hour wartsila Diesel Engine Overhaul
on both port and starboard wartsila W9L20 main engines onboard an offshore vessel in Qatar. The project included comprehensive mechanical servicing and critical component replacements as per OEM guidelines to restore engine performance and reliability.
Planning
Number of Engineers: 10 (including team leader)
Planned Duration: ~45 days
The tasks are planned as part of the Wartsila engine overhaul services and inspection program. Each task has been carefully scheduled to ensure systematic execution, starting with performance checks, followed by dismantling, inspection, cleaning, measurements, reassembly, and final testing. Safety protocols and tool/spare inspections are included prior to execution.
Procedure Carried Out
Overhauling of both engines' cylinder heads, pistons, and connecting rods
Replacement of con-rod small end bush, piston rings, and bearings
Crank web deflection measurements
Damper and camshaft bush renewal
Overhauling of fuel injection pumps, injectors, turbochargers, and charge air coolers
Overhauling of fuel injection pumps, injectors, turbochargers, and charge air coolers
Overhauling of HT/LT water pumps and thermostatic valves
Inspection of exhaust systems, water lines, and starting air motor
Governor drive gear shaft inspection and engine pre-commissioning checks
Execution of load trial and performance validation
Wartsila Engine Overhaul Results
The 38,000-hour major overhaul of both Wartsila W9L20 main engines was completed successfully within the planned shipyard schedule, followed by commissioning and sea trials with all engine operating parameters performing within OEM limits.
Key Main Engine Overhaul Results and Operational Impact
Successful completion of wartsila engine major overhaul on both port and starboard main engines with minimal schedule deviation.
Restoration of engine reliability through renewal of critical rotating and wear components, including bearings, cam bushes, vibration dampers and piston assemblies.
Crankshaft deflection, clearances, calibration checks and mechanical settings verified within OEM acceptable tolerances.
Successful completion of load trials and sea trials, validating engine performance at operating conditions.
Improved operational readiness and reduced risk of unplanned downtime through comprehensive 38K maintenance execution.
Both engines handed over to the customer with performance parameters satisfactory and accepted by vessel technical representatives.
Project Impact
Extended service life of twin main engines
Improved combustion and mechanical efficiency
Enhanced reliability for offshore vessel operations
Reduced lifecycle maintenance risk through preventive major overhaul intervention
