Summary About The Project

Neptunus carried out clutch troubleshooting of the PORT and STBD engine clutch systems equipped with Hitachi AGCP 162A clutches on a marine vessel in India. The work focused on abnormal clutch engagement, slip clutch operation, Z-Peller clutch control, control signal verification, GSO lever operation, steering control functionality, and control transfer issues. Prior to troubleshooting, the PORT clutch was reported to engage directly into full clutch condition, while the STBD clutch showed an inconsistent slip sequence with a sudden jerk during engagement. The local Z-Peller components and clutch control system were inspected, including the control cards, wiring, and electrical connections at the Bridge, ECR, and Main Engine panels.

During live engine testing, both PORT and STBD clutches were observed engaging directly into full clutch condition without properly following the required slip stages. Control signals from the Bridge to ECR and ECR to the Z-Peller/clutch system were verified, and slip command signals were found to be available. The clutch response, however, remained abnormal.

The troubleshooting also included emergency operation checks using a single GSO lever. The STBD GSO control was found to be malfunctioning. The GSO lever, single control dial, and universal steering control system were calibrated and functionally tested. Following calibration, continuous steering movement in one direction was observed, leading to further investigation of the steering control input and power supply.

The single control dial potentiometer was found faulty, while the power supply and wiring connections were found satisfactory. Based on the troubleshooting observations, the clutch malfunction was considered likely related to hydraulic control valves and associated components.

Mandatory spare recommendations were provided for the Fema valves, slip solenoid valves, and main clutch valve. The customer also decided to engage another vendor for rectification of the control transfer system.

Live testing confirmed that both PORT and STBD clutches were engaging directly into full clutch condition instead of following the required staged slip sequence. Control signals from the Bridge through ECR to the Z-Peller/clutch system were verified and found to be available, while the actual clutch response remained abnormal.

The troubleshooting also identified a malfunctioning STBD GSO control and a faulty single control dial potentiometer. Calibration of the GSO lever, single control dial, and universal steering control was carried out, followed by additional functional checks and verification of the power supply and wiring.

Based on the observations, the clutch malfunction was considered likely associated with the hydraulic control valves and related components. Mandatory spare recommendations were provided for Fema valves, slip solenoid valves, and the main clutch valve.

The customer decided to engage another vendor for rectification of the control transfer system. Neptunus recommended replacement and inspection of the identified control components followed by complete functional testing of the clutch, GSO, steering, and control transfer systems before returning the vessel to normal operation.
