Summary About The Project

Neptunus successfully carried out a 30K top overhaul of an EMD 16-645-E8 main engine installed on a drilling rig in India. The engine had accumulated approximately 210,448 running hours at the start of the overhaul. The previous 120K major overhaul was carried out by Neptunus in November 2017 at approximately 179,770 running hours.

Prior to dismantling, all engine operating parameters were recorded and found satisfactory. Minor leakages were observed from the exhaust manifold.

The overhaul included inspection, renewal, calibration, and reassembly of major engine systems. Key activities included renewal of all power pack assemblies, connecting rod and main bearings, injectors, rocker arm assemblies, valve bridges, camshaft bearings, starting air motors, lube oil pump, water pumps, scavenging and fuel transfer pumps, both blowers, lube oil cooler assembly, and associated seals and gaskets.

Crankshaft crank pins were cleaned and calibrated, gear train backlashes were checked, liner pilot bores were measured, and bumping clearances were recorded. The exhaust manifold was cleaned and fitted with new mounting gaskets, while the thermostat housing and engine breathing system were also serviced.

Comprehensive pre-commissioning checks and safety shutdown tests were carried out before the engine trial. Load trials were conducted from 50% to 80% load, with engine parameters monitored throughout the trial. All recorded trial observations and safety checks were found satisfactory, following which the engine was handed over for operation.

Conclusion

Neptunus successfully completed the 30K top overhaul of the EMD 16-645-E8 main engine installed on a drilling rig in India. The overhaul involved systematic inspection, component renewal, calibration, reassembly, pre-commissioning, safety testing, and load trials.

Major activities included renewal of power pack assemblies, fuel injectors, rocker arm assemblies, valve bridges, connecting rod bearings, main bearings, camshaft bearings, starting air motors, pumps, blowers, lube oil cooler, thermostat, and associated seals and gaskets.

Critical measurements including crank pin journal dimensions, gear train backlashes, liner pilot bore measurements, bumping clearances, valve timing, and crankshaft axial play were recorded during the overhaul.

The engine successfully completed pre-commissioning checks, safety shutdown testing, and load trials from 50% to 80% load. The recorded operating parameters and safety checks were found satisfactory.

Following successful trials and joint inspection, the engine was handed over for long-term operation with recommendations for post-overhaul monitoring and the next scheduled 60K MOH.
