Objective

To transition the vessel from conventional time-based Planned Maintenance to Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM) by implementing an Engine Condition Monitoring System (ECMS) and achieving IRS CBM Notation through continuous condition monitoring, fault detection, and compliance with IRS requirements.

Challenge / Problem Context

  • Transitioning from Time-Based to Condition-Based Maintenance:
    The vessel relied on scheduled maintenance intervals, making it necessary to establish a reliable condition monitoring approach that could support maintenance decisions based on actual engine health.
  • Demonstrating Long-Term System Reliability:
    IRS required continuous monitoring over an extended period to validate that the ECMS could consistently collect accurate operational data under normal sailing conditions.
  • Meeting IRS CBM Compliance Requirements:
    The vessel had to satisfy stringent IRS guidelines through documented monitoring, system performance, and verification before CBM Notation could be granted.
  • Validating Fault Detection and Diagnostic Accuracy:
    Beyond routine monitoring, the ECMS needed to demonstrate its capability to detect developing engine faults accurately and distinguish between different operating conditions.

What Did We Do?

  • Implemented Engine Condition Monitoring for Continuous Health Assessment:
    Installed the Engine Condition Monitoring System (ECMS) on the vessel's Yanmar main propulsion engine in August 2024 and established continuous monitoring to replace traditional maintenance practices with data-driven condition assessment.
  • Executed Six Months of Continuous Engine Monitoring:
    Monitored the engine continuously for six months under normal vessel operating conditions, collecting real-time operational data while ensuring every monitoring activity was performed under IRS supervision to comply with class requirements.
  • Supported IRS Evaluation with Comprehensive Performance Data:
    Compiled and submitted detailed monitoring records, operational data, and system performance reports, demonstrating the ECMS's capability to reliably monitor engine health in accordance with IRS CBM guidelines.
  • Validated Fault Detection Through Extended Monitoring and Dedicated CBM Survey:
    Continued monitoring for an additional six months and successfully completed a dedicated CBM survey in December 2025, validating the system's fault detection capability, diagnostic accuracy, and overall reliability through detailed trial reports submitted to IRS.

Results That We Achieved

  • Successful Transition to Condition-Based Maintenance:
    Enabled Ambuja Gauri to move from time-based Planned Maintenance to a Condition-Based Maintenance strategy supported by continuous engine health monitoring.
  • IRS CBM Compliance Successfully Demonstrated:
    Met all IRS monitoring, documentation, and performance validation requirements through supervised implementation and long-term operational data.
  • Proven Fault Detection and Diagnostic Capability:
    Demonstrated the ECMS's ability to accurately detect developing engine faults and provide reliable diagnostics under varying operating conditions.
  • Awarded IRS Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM) Notation:
    Ambuja Gauri officially received IRS CBM Notation in December 2025, establishing a significant milestone in predictive maintenance and marine asset reliability.
