In addition to routine maintenance, MAN engines require scheduled overhauls based on running hours and condition.
A Top Overhaul (ToH) is carried out after a defined interval and mainly covers the combustion system—it includes servicing cylinder heads, replacing valve seats and seals, inspecting piston crowns and rings, cleaning combustion chambers, and adjusting valve clearances to maintain fuel efficiency and reliability.
A major MAN engine overhaul is performed after longer operating cycles, is a complete engine restoration process involving full disassembly, replacement of worn parts such as pistons, liners, bearings, and cylinder heads, as well as overhauling turbochargers, pumps, and the fuel system. The engine is then reassembled, calibrated, and tested to restore it to near-original performance and extend service life.Leave a Reply
