Wartsila Engine
Troubleshooting

Services

Wartsila engine troubleshooting is the process of diagnosing and resolving faults, alarms, and performance issues in Wartsila engines to restore reliable operation, prevent repeat failures, and minimise costly downtime.

At Neptunus, we provide specialised Wartsila engine troubleshooting services backed by over 3 decades of hands-on experience supporting marine and power generation engines across 30+ countries. Our engineers follow a systematic diagnostic approach that goes beyond simply responding to alarms, identifying the actual root cause behind mechanical, fuel, electrical, and control system failures to ensure accurate repairs the first time.

Our troubleshooting expertise includes interpreting WECS (Wartsila Engine Control System) and UNIC fault codes, analysing live engine performance data such as pressures, temperatures, timing, and load behaviour, and resolving recurring operational issues before they escalate into major breakdowns or unplanned overhauls. From fuel injection timing irregularities and turbocharger surging to governor instability and combustion-related faults, we deliver practical, field-proven solutions based on extensive real-world experience with Wartsila engines.

We maintain in-house technical documentation, service bulletins, and model-specific engineering knowledge that allow us to respond quickly and accurately during critical fault situations. Understanding that engine downtime directly impacts vessel operations, power generation continuity, and commercial performance, our engineers remain available around the clock to support urgent troubleshooting and corrective maintenance requirements.

Step-by-Step Wartsila Engine Troubleshooting Procedure by Neptunus

This is the structured process our engineers follow on every job. It ensures nothing is missed and the root cause, not just the symptom, is addressed.
Step 1: Alarm and Fault Code Assessment
The first step is never to reset the alarm and move on. We record and document every active and recent fault code from the engine control system (WECS, UNIC, or FAST panels). Each code is cross-referenced with the engine’s service history to identify patterns.
Common fault areas flagged at this stage: High exhaust temperatures, low lube oil pressure, fuel pressure deviations, speed governor faults.
Step 2: Operational Data Review
Before any physical inspection, we analyze the engine’s operating data load history, temperature logs, pressure trends, and fuel consumption records. Comparing current values against baseline performance data often reveals whether a fault is sudden or has been developing gradually.
Tools used: WWECS data logs, performance calculators, trend analysis charts.
Step 3: Visual and Physical Inspection
A systematic external walk-around of the engine is conducted, checking for:
Physical findings at this stage often confirm or redirect the diagnosis from Step 1.
Step 4 : System-by-System Diagnostic Testing
Each major system is tested individually to isolate the fault:
Step 5: Root Cause Identification
With data from all four steps combined, our engineers determine the definitive root cause. This is documented clearly, distinguishing between:
This distinction is critical for Wartsila engine repair planning and preventing recurrence.
Step 6: Repair Recommendation and Execution

Based on the root cause, we provide a clear repair scope, covering what needs to be replaced, reconditioned, adjusted, or monitored. Where possible, we recommend repairs that can be completed without full engine removal to reduce downtime.

All repairs are carried out by certified Wartsila-experienced engineers using OEM-specification or approved equivalent parts.
Step 7: Post-Repair Testing and Performance Verification
Once repairs are complete, the engine is restarted and run through a structured load test. We verify:
A post-repair report is issued documenting findings, work completed, and any recommendations for future maintenance intervals.
